An animated history of Wimbledon tennis
A beautifully told story, capturing great moments, periodical style and the changing face of the world's most famous lawn tennis event.
Working with McCann London and Wimbledon, Smith and Foulkes’ brought to life a beautifully illustrated and animated journey through the evolution of the Wimbledon tennis tournament.
The trailer shows the evolution of Wimbledon through a single continuous tennis rally, beginning in 1877 with Spencer Gore and continuing through the ages right up to the stars of the present day. As each new era begins, the illustrative style evolves with it, capturing the era and historic details such as radically changing fashions, pony rollers used to keep the courts in prime condition, tv broadcasts, and even the switch to yellow balls.
The 60-second short film traces the history and journey of the sport of lawn tennis at London's Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club under the concept #TakeOnHistory. From early beginnings of the cultured game in 1877, through to the performance driven, technology enabled modern day, the story is told through multiple animation styles that reflect the era.
The film was created by Will Cottam and James Crosby at McCann, and directed by Smith & Foulkes at Nexus Studios.
